Understanding Print Talk: What is Gang Run?

Let’s talk about Gang Run: no, it’s not a printing press version of an action movie—though it could involve some serious behind-the-scenes action. A Gang Run (also known as a Combo Run, or Combination Run if you’re feeling fancy) is when multiple jobs are printed at the same production run on a printing press. Here’s an example: let’s say you’re a brand managing multiple retail stores and require a large quantity of product cards for every SKU going on your shelf. Since all the cards share the same format, paper type, and delivery timeline, it makes sense to combine—or gang—these jobs into one order. By doing so, you only pay once for press setup, finishing and all those nitty-gritty expenses associated with offset press setup. Plus, less paper goes to the bin.

When’s a Gang Run the Best Idea?

If you’re printing several items that all need the same paper and ink specs, it’s time to gang up. Popular items, like full-color business cards, flyers, postcards, or Christmas cards are perfect candidates for this. You’re getting the same great quality at a lower cost.

When’s a Gang Run a No-Go?

There are many jobs that just aren’t gang material. If you’re printing anything that’s less standard-sized, like a brochure where every shade of blue has to be just so, a Gang Run isn’t the right choice. Likewise, if your project requires special paper or effects, we’ll suggest a separate print run.

Each project is different, and we take the time to understand your specific requirements. This allows us to identify strategic opportunities, such as leveraging Gang Runs or seeking alternative solutions that make sense for your brand.
